Bio

Michael Ano is an artist, curator, and educator. Contemplating the transmission of ideas and its correlative relationship to systems of power- Ano makes alternative platforms for information distribution, to explore how ideas and people connect to ask whether pedagogical methods can more fully democratize the diffusion of learning, and to conduct critical thought experiments in deconstructing how resources associated with social stratification are codified. He has explored a variety of pedagogical practices both formally and informally through different lenses: as a student, instructor, facilitator, and producer.

Ano was the co-founder and director of Catalyst Gallery at University of California, Irvine from 2005-2007. In 2008 he founded ASAP (after school arts program) a nomadic arts education collective modeled after the grade school programs of the same name. Ano has mediated projects at Visual Communications, Outpost for Contemporary Art, Otis College of Art and Design, the New Museum's Ideas City, and Slanguage's Third World Creative.  His work has been exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Sea and Space Explorations, and the San Diego Art Institute. He has worked organizing educational programs and outreach at the Orange County Museum of Art, the Norton Simon Museum, the New Museum, University of California, San Diego, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Most recently Ano joined the editorial collective FIELD: A Journal of Socially-Engaged Art Criticism, and became contributor tor KCET’s ArtBound.
